These results do not reveal any issues, you are you using one of Ziggo's DNS servers.

Another way to perform troubleshooting is using the web browser's developer tools. The Network tab in developer tools displays all requests performed inside the tab. When you select a (delayed) request, another row of tabs is displayed, including the Timings tab, which should reveal where the delay occurs.

Hello, I just got Ziggo internet (Wifi via the black SmartWifi modem) and I'm experiencing significant lag in pinging the internet. I'm connecting via a black SmartWifi modem.

For example, when I try to access a website I will frequently have a 10-12 second delay where there is no internet data received (according to my network monitor) before it finally accesses the website. Once it connects thought it's fine and fast as expected. This is very clearly a device-internet interaction problem, as it only occurs when using my Macbook (but never on any other non-Mac device), and it's not app specific (happens on multiple browsers, different apps, etc.). While the delay in logging into websites is merely annoying, this is a more serious problem for other applications that fail to work because when opened they detect no internet connection. For example things like my VPN will not work because when they try to connect there is no connections for so long they time out. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

This could indicate that IPv6 connections are failing, causing the connection to be established using IPv4 instead.

When accessing e.g. ip.bieringer.net, do you experience the delay as well? Does the website display IPv6 or IPv4 precedence?

I did want to mention DNS, but this seems less likely since the delay only occurs during the initial connection and requesting a web page usually initiates multiple DNS lookups for various domain names, which would then be delayed as well, causing an overall 'sluggish' experience while browsing. Apparent DNS issues are often caused by an underlying issue. Wireshark and/or the browser's developer tools would be ideal for analysis and troubleshooting in this case.

TS mentioned only the initial connection being slow/delayed. In case of a DNS server issue, I would expect these delays to persist throughout the browsing session as subsequent lookups are being sent. TTLs are often short nowadays, especially for popular/busy domain names, e.g. <1 minute. Also, TS mentioned the problem only occurs on the MacBook and not on other devices.

I never experienced a similar issue with dnsmasq and recommend against modifying the TTL for replies from upstream servers, so do the dnsmasq developers:

Note that artificially extending TTL values is in general a bad idea, do not do it unless you have a good reason, and understand what you are doing.

This is likely off-topic unless TS is using a separate (caching) DNS forwarder/server. The SmartWifi modem simply distributes Ziggo's DNS servers directly in default config, local DNS is not available.

My bad, the 4-second delay still being present when querying Google (8.8.8.8) directly indeed rules out dnsmasq.

Thank you all for your help!

@tt14111 when I open ip.bieringer.net it (1) opens immediately, but (2) takes the full ~10 seconds before it registers the precedence, the same length as other delayed site I open simultaneously. It registers IPv6 precedence (after the 10 seconds). However, if I turn off IPv6 entirely and retry all of this, it's the exact same experience. A ~10 second delay across sites and in ip.bieringer.net recognizing the IPv4 precedence. So it doesn't seem like the issue is IPv6.

If it were a DNS issue, how might I go about identifying it? And I do not use a separate/caching DNS forwarder/server, just the SmartWifi modem default.

I should also mention something, which is that it seems random which website the delay occurs on. The only obvious pattern is that (1) if it happens, it generally happens only the first time during a browsing session, and (2) closing and opening the browser seems to reset it and cause it again with previous websites. And it happens collectively, so for example if I open up three site at the same time, they'll either all experience the delay or none will. But it's definitely not a newly-visited website problem, I can often open up sites new to me entirely and they'll sometime open without delay.
